How do you convert time to decimal hours?
To convert a time to decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60 and add the whole hours. That makes 15 minutes 0.25 hours, 30 minutes 0.50, and 45 minutes 0.75, so 7:45 is 7.75 hours. Payroll usually rounds to two decimal places. Pay is most accurate when it is calculated from the minutes, not the rounded decimal.
How it works
- Hours stay the same. Only the minutes change. In 7:45, the 7 stays 7.
- Divide the minutes by 60. 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75.
- Round to two decimal places. 7 + 0.75 = 7.75 hours.
- To go back, multiply the decimal part by 60. 7.40 hours is 0.40 × 60 = 24 minutes, so 7 hours 24 minutes, not 7:40.
Worked example: why pay comes from minutes
Someone works 7 hours 50 minutes at $19.00 an hour.
- 50 ÷ 60 = 0.8333…, which rounds to 0.83. The decimal is 7.83 hours.
- Pay from minutes: 470 minutes × $19.00 ÷ 60 = $148.83
- Pay from the rounded decimal: 7.83 × $19.00 = $148.77
The 6-cent gap comes from rounding before multiplying. Over a year of shifts it adds up, which is why this calculator works out pay from minutes and uses decimals only for display.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and round to two decimal places. 20 minutes is 20 ÷ 60 = 0.33 hours. Add the result to the whole hours, so 8 hours 20 minutes is 8.33 hours.
Is 7:30 the same as 7.3 hours?
No. 7:30 is 7 hours 30 minutes, which is 7.50 hours. 7.3 hours is 7 hours 18 minutes. Mixing the two up is one of the most common timesheet mistakes.
How do I convert decimal hours back to minutes?
Multiply the decimal part by 60. 6.25 hours is 6 hours plus 0.25 × 60 = 15 minutes, so 6:15. For 6.8 hours, 0.8 × 60 = 48 minutes, so 6:48.
What is 0.1 hours in minutes?
6 minutes. That is why some employers round to the nearest tenth of an hour: each tenth is exactly 6 minutes. 0.5 hours is 30 minutes, and 0.25 hours is 15 minutes.
How many decimal places should payroll use?
Two places is the usual standard and gives an error of less than a minute. Some systems use tenths of an hour, which is the same as rounding to 6 minutes. Whatever your payroll uses, pay is most accurate when it is calculated from the total minutes.
Why is my pay slightly different from hours × rate?
Usually because the hours were rounded before multiplying. 7.83 × $19.00 = $148.77, but 7 hours 50 minutes at $19.00 is $148.83. The gap is small for one day but grows over a pay period.
